LION KING 2019

Seeking Simba

After 3 trips to the US, It is time to go back to Southern Africa !

I (Nivek) fell in love with Southern Africa 8 years ago. I’ve been to the most part of the area countries – South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana – on three different trips. But still so much to discover, and I can’t wait sharing that experience with Manu.

So idea is to introduce her to African way of life, wildness, wilderness and…. adventure !
And on my side discover new parts of already mentioned countries.

With this objectives we’ll be landing in Cape Town on the 9th of August 2019 and Leaving from Johannesburg on the 2nd of September 2019.

Forecasted Stages

End of 2018 was dedicated to decide main spots and book the car.
It was hard to chose main spots, you need a whole life to see a maybe 10% so what a challenge to pick places when you only have 3 weeks…

Decision made,  our main spots will be :

  • Cape Town and its area
  • Namaqua National Park (Mix of costal area and famous for flowers during spring)
  • |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park (Mountain area on the Orange River – should be nice loneless experience)
  • Kgalagadi Transfontier Park & Mabuasehube (I enjoyed KTP in 2012, can’t wait to see Botswana’s part and Mabuasehube)
  • CKGR (the heart of Botswana)

More or less 4000 km and 80 hours driving, numbers I know I shouldn’t superate for a 3 weeks trip.

The vessel

For the car we’ll go for Britz as Nivek really appreciated their service in the past.

We chose a fully equiped Land Cruiser, maybe too much and not needed for that trip. But it is our pleasure as people rent a cab for the US West Coast !

Resources

Useful sites

🏕️ SAN Parks
The most useful and official site to get information about the South African parks (such as maps, activities) and to book park campsites directly online. It’s too easy regarding other Southern Africa Experience !!

🏕️ Maun Self Drive 4×4
Booking a campsite in a park in Botswana, can look like a nightmare sometimes. That website for us is the referentiel of what have been privatised or not to understand if we must go through DWNP or private companies. More infos here

Guides and maps

🗺️ Tracks4Africa
You won’t find better maps than Tracks4Africa. At least, this is our point of vue ! More about this nice community innitiative here.

📍 Tracks4Africa
Regarding GPS Maps… them again… well, they sell maps on all supports !! More about interest of having a GPS for an African trip here.

📚 As far as guides, for this trip we used some of the ones Nivek already had. Regarding our guide selection for Africa, your can find more here.
